Choosing The Best Cisco Certificates For You

There are many different Cisco certificates that can be achieved in the computer networking and telecommunications industry. However, it can often be confusing for new IT people to determine the best path forward with these certifications. For the most part, any Cisco certification will be helpful to your career regardless of which path you choose to take. However, you should also consider your strengths and weaknesses, and of course what you actually want to do for a living before you make a decision.

Often, new IT people fall in love with the fact that they can obtain Cisco certification and make a lot of money. This kind of drowns out what they will actually enjoy doing every day for their entire career. For example, if you don't like supporting people and equipment, you should tailor your certification path towards something that is more behind the scenes. On the other hand, if you shutter at the idea of spending the next 30 years in a cubicle, you have to consider best option to keep you out of the office.

In addition, you also have to consider the industry in your specific geographic area. All the certifications in the world will not help much if there is no call in your area for someone with your skill level. An example of this may be if you live in a small town it may be difficult to obtain a high level IT security position.

The only other reaming factor is the maturity of the certification you are considering. The routing and switching certification has been in high demand for many years and will continue that way. On the other hand, the voice path is relatively new and it is not real clear what the future will hold for this certification. However, I believe smart money suggests that all Cisco certification paths will remain in demand and you should have no problem earning a great Cisco salary once you have the experience to match your certification level.

Once you add it all up, the most important factor to consider is what you will enjoy doing for a living. Having a great salary and easily being able to find work is worthless if you hate the types of jobs you are qualified for. Thus, you should think about the perfect job for you long before you purchase your first Cisco book. This comes pretty easily if you are already in IT and have exposure to what your peers in the networking department are doing all day. However, if you never held a job in IT this can be the most difficult question to answer.

The best option is to look around the Internet and try to find a blog or more information about specific job titles that the various certifications will qualify you for. If something sounds interesting or like something you will want to do for a living, you can research it further until you really understand the position. By following this advice, there will be no surprises when you enter the workforce with your new certification.
